English Youth Community (E-YouC) Makassar Holds its First Free Meeting for the 2025-2026 Period

The English Youth Community Makassar opened its first Free Meeting of the 2025–2026 period on Sunday, 23 November 2025, bringing together a lively group of young learners at the Masjid Agung courtyard in the late afternoon. The meeting carried a casual, outdoor atmosphere that made the whole session feel more like a friendly gathering than a formal class  which was exactly what the community intended.

The event started with a short warm-up game to help participants focus and loosen up. It didn’t take long before everyone was laughing, exchanging quick reactions, and slowly getting comfortable with one another. The game was simple, but it did its job: breaking the silence and easing the nerves of those who were still unsure about speaking English in front of others.

After that, the formatur began introducing the day’s topic: Basic Conversation Practice. Instead of diving into heavy explanations, the formatur kept things light and straightforward, examples, quick phrases, and expressions that people actually use when meeting someone for the first time. Greetings, introductions, asking simple questions, giving short opinions, and other everyday essentials were presented in a way that made participants feel, “Oh, I can actually try this.”

Once the material ended, the group moved into a more interactive part of the session. Participants were split into small circles, each guided by a formatur who encouraged them to talk, ask questions, and respond naturally. Mistakes weren’t treated as problems, just part of the process. The small-group setup made the conversations flow more easily, especially for those who were usually shy about speaking English.

Beyond introducing basic conversation skills, the Free Meeting was designed to give participants a space where they could practice English without pressure. The English Youth Community hopes that by creating an environment that feels relaxed and open, learners will become more confident and willing to speak up. For the formaturs, the meeting also served as an opportunity to grow, experimenting with new teaching approaches, learning how to handle diverse levels of proficiency, and building genuine connections with participants. In short, the Free Meeting aims to support both sides: learners who want to improve, and formaturs who want to sharpen their facilitation skills.

One participant shared at the end of the meeting that they came in feeling nervous, unsure whether they would be able to speak at all. But as the activities went on, they found themselves participating more than they expected. They mentioned that the friendly atmosphere, along with the formaturs’ supportive guidance, helped them feel at ease. For them, the session made English feel less like a subject to memorize and more like something they could actually use.

The positive response from the participants shows a promising start for the English Youth Community Makassar in this new period. The community hopes to continue offering sessions that are not only educational but also warm, open, and genuinely enjoyable for everyone involved.
